Traveling with a Mac laptop and looking for FREE Hotspots?

If you use a laptop and travel a lot you almost always are looking for a WiFi hotspot to check your email or do some internet search of some sort, but what if you are in a foreign location and can’t quite find a free hotspot that could help you out. Well, “wardriving” has allowed others to find hotspots as well as putting together a listing of some of the free ones that can help you either find a quiet spot to do your work or that gets you out of the crowd. Two web sites are:

  • Wigle.net - a free hotspot locator that covers more than just businesses that offer free connections.
  • FreeHotSpots – a listing of mostly businesses and local organizations such as libraries that have free hotspots.

Do you have a web site that you visit that can help get you connected? Share with us.

Using iWorks Number as simple Project Planner

You know, sometimes as entrepreneurs we get so busy that using a large project planning software such as the OmniPlan, FastTrack Schedule 9, or Shared Plan can be daunting as well as cumbersome to learn and just plain overkill for small projects that entrepreneurs need to have done in a day or over a weekend. So what’s an entrepreneur to do?

You can use iWorks Pages or Numbers to track your simple projects. How?

In Number create a blank sheet and enter in data exactly like the image shows.
    numbersproject

Using Numbers duration function in the “Time” column (w=week, d=days, h=hours, in a “3w,2d,14h” format) you can add up the number of hours that it takes to do a project. Changing the “Time” column to a strict “Number of Hours” you can now calculate the total cost of the project on an hourly basis.

You can reorganize via drag and drop each “task” from one line to another in the order they need to be finished. You can even use the Numbers spreadsheet with Pages to do a “Request For Proposal (RFP)” and give it to your client.

Tons of ways to make Numbers work for you as a simple project planner.

You can even save to your blog to your “local drafts” folder on your iPhone to select to publish it later. Nice feature, especially if you are interupted and need to get back to of later on.

    Check it out.

5 Mac OS X RSS Readers for the Mac

If you get onto the internet a lot you know about RSS readers, which are readers that access the RSS technology and display links to web pages that just shows the text rather than the whole web page. Using Apple’s Safari you can “reduce” the amount of text that you can read thus speeding up the level of seeing various articles.

    The RSS feed icon looks like this;

So, there are 5 Mac OS X RSS readers for the Mac that you can review and see if one fits your needs if you don’t like Safari’s implementation of the technology.

    Do Interns become Entrepreneurs?

Where do Entrepreneur’s come from? Some come from older workers that want to chase their dream? Others come from immigrants that want to better their life. But some even come from the most unlikely of sources: Interns!

In the article “Do Interns become Entrepreneurs” you see some of the reason why interns become entrepreneurs. Because of this we should be encouraging these individuals so that they can get the right focus and direction to contributing to their life and to the economy.

One thing I can say to any intern is this: if you go out on your own you’ll learn more from your mistakes that your successes and most millionaires have at least 3-6 business failures before they get it right!! Keep on going no matter what and you’ll succeed.

Looking to connect with other like minded individuals: Meetup!

Entrepreneurship can be a lonely endeavor since you may be “home alone” for lengths of time, but thanks to MeetUp.com you can now find others that have the same interests as you, or, you can start a meet up group if you don’t find any that fits what your way of thinking.

What better way of meeting new clients or just getting out of the house.

The nice thing about MeetUp is that it is nationwide so that if you are traveling you can search for other meetups that might provide a source of information or networking once you arrive in a new city. It also provides a great way of networking with those of various interests that you might otherwise not have considered such as a wine group that meets once a month or a writers group that tells you how to get your first book published.

    So, let’s MeetUp next time.
